The Senior Accessibility Remediation Specialist provides document remediation services in support of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Civil Works Directorate at Headquarters USACE (HQ USACE), ensuring that digital content complies with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards.

This role directly supports the Civil Works Directorate’s mission by ensuring that critical documentation used for water resources development, infrastructure programs, and public communications is accessible to all users, including individuals who rely on assistive technologies.

The Senior Accessibility Remediation Specialist is responsible for remediating a wide range of digital documents, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe PDF files, ensuring proper tagging structures, reading order, semantic formatting, and accessibility compliance. The role also involves correcting OCR errors, repairing complex tables, and ensuring that all visual elements are properly described using alternative text.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and highly technical accessibility professional who is capable of supporting high-volume remediation efforts while maintaining strict quality and compliance standards. This individual must be self-driven, able to work independently in a remote environment, and capable of managing multiple remediation tasks simultaneously.

The candidate should be comfortable working in a structured remediation workflow environment and using industry-standard tools such as Adobe Acrobat Pro, CommonLook, PAC (PDF Accessibility Checker), and Microsoft Office accessibility tools to execute remediation tasks efficiently.


Day-to-Day Activities

  • Remediate Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF documents to ensure accessibility compliance
  • Apply semantic tagging structures to establish proper document hierarchy
  • Correct reading order and logical navigation for assistive technology users
  • Add alternative text to images, charts, and graphical elements
  • Repair and restructure complex tables to ensure accessibility compliance
  • Perform OCR corrections on scanned or image-based documents
  • Ensure proper use of headings, lists, and document structure elements
  • Conduct accessibility checks using remediation tools and validation software
  • Support document intake reviews and assess remediation complexity
  • Track remediation progress and maintain documentation logs
  • Collaborate with validation analysts to address identified compliance issues
  • Execute remediation workflows to support high-volume document processing
